INLEIDING

Gepoogd zal worden door middel van oude ansichten en foto's een beeld te geven de stad Deventer in de periode tussen 1860 en 1935. Dit visuele beeld is uiteraard bepaald door de middelen die ons ter beschikking stonden. In de eerste plaats, geize de opezet van deze serie boekjes, waren dit de ansichten. Deze verschijnen in Nedeland voor het eerst in 1870, maar worden pas sinds ca. 1900 in groten getale aangemaakt. Hun uiterlijk was wwn weerspiegeling van het feit, dat men zijn familie en vrienden liefst een aanterkkelijk straatbeeld en slechts bij uitzondering een curieuze gebeurtenis zond. Bij de Deventer prentbriefkaartverzamelingen, zowel van particulieren als van museum en archief, zijn dan ook die kaarten overvloedig aanwezig, die bijvoorbeeld de nieuwe Keizerstraat, de bekende Lebuinus of de Brink afbeelden. De voor ons meer interssante Noordenberg-en Bergkwartieren bijvoorbeeld waren echter reeds toen buurten, waarvan men niet bij voorkeur ansichten maakte of nam. Om de hiaten uit vroeger tijd op te vullen, toen de prentbriefkaart nog niet of heel beperkt gebruilt werd, en om daar te voorzien, waar men niet de moeite had genomen een "lelijk" straatbeeld op een ansicht uit te beelden, werd een beroep gedaan op originale foto's. Immers Deventer in de 75 haren, die liggen tussen 1860 en 1935, in haar groei van ruim 16.000 inwoners tot bijna 40.000 af te beelden, is tenslotte de opzet van dit boekje. Dit tot verklaring van het naast elkaar gebruiken van foto's en ansichten.
